Mary Roth, associate professor and head of the civil and environmental engineering department at Lafayette College, said the area is littered with potential sinkholes.
They can occur naturally or can be exacerbated by human activity such as development and construction...
"The drawback is that there is never a perfect fix," Roth said. "They can open up again."
Excerpt from the Express Times, December 9, 2004
Seen around the township:
After Charley - mid-August 2004
After the December 23rd rains
Near the golf course
It's so BIG!
The big hole had a baby!

Lest we forget...
The first 4 images are of
the LARGE sinkhole on
the new part of Broadway
Road near the golf
course.  It has been
repaired... but, as Mary
Roth says, "They can
open up again."
Yes, this is the area
where the really big
sinkhole was and yes
you see curb cuts and
utility hookups.
The next 2 photos are of a
sinkhole repair on
Broadway Road.  The
pipe is the new sewer line.
Yes, that (above) is a
new (small) sinkhole
in the area where El
Grande was repaired.
The next 4 photos are of
what appears to be an
ongoing repair to a
townhouse stie (a block of
3 homes) on the new
section of Broadway
Road.
Broadway Road may
be the single most
reworked roadway in
Forks!
After Frances - early September 2004
And it just gets deeper!
Site of a future townhouse... off of Broadway
At the Edge of the Abyss - off of Broadway
Gee, right next to a curb cutout... on the edge of the abyss
The golf course neighbors to be... who will tell them?
A closer view along the road edge
The entire depression is a sinkhole
The big hole is having babies now
Sink hole spawn
How to grow a sinkhole...
More babies... when they grow up, they can golf too
A sign goes up... a farm goes away
One week later - repair in progress
Two photos combined
above to show the whole
hole. There are smaller
holes inside this
excavation.

Frost Hollow and Rt. 611... not much to support the road
Frost Hollow Creek eats the land... no bridge to keep it in place
Frost Hollow and Rt. 611 sink holes opened

Ivan caused terrible

who suffered its rage.

Frost Hollow & Route 611
It's difficult to imagine
that this could
happen to anyone
twice in such a short
time.
The sinkholes from
Ivan seem filled.
Winchester Drive births another sinkhole
Yes, they get repaired and come back again!
A sinkhole is born
along the new
Winchester Dr. -
Right next to one
repaired last Fall.
Our hearts go out to all
who are dealing with
the mess of this latest
flooding.
One week later, a close up
After Jeanne - late September 2004

On its edge, the big hole has a tunnel
Sinkhole repair in progess - this is one in the road near the golf course and near the BIG HOLE
